Frequently Asked Questions

What happens in an assessment?
You will have your disability related study needs discussed with you and potential study aids demonstrated and/or discussed. Also any support needs will be discussed with you.
How long will the assessment take?
The face-to-face meeting will last about 2 hours on average.
Will I have to undertake any tests during the assessment?
No, the assessment is undertaken in a professional but informal atmosphere. The assessor is there to gain understanding of your needs.
Do I have to bring anything with me to the assessment?
If you wear glasses or use hearing aids it would be helpful if you brought these with you.
Will this assessment process have any cost implication to me personally?
No. Unless you wish to upgrade any equipment or software recommended. Travel expenses to the assessment can be reimbursed through your DSA.
What do I do after I receive my final report?
Two or three days after you receive your final copy, you may wish to telephone your Funding Body to check that they have received the report and ask how long it may take before they write to you. Funding Bodies have big variations in their workloads. Typically they are very busy in the autumn term, so please be aware of the pressures that they are under. But for your own good, don’t allow matters to slip.
Why is there more than one quotation with my report?
Your Funding Body has asked us to supply more than one quotation. They will tell you which supplier to contact when they write to you.
How do I get the equipment that has been recommended for me?
Different funding bodies use different methods; for example, some will ask you to contact the supplier yourself, others will contact them on your behalf. The letter from your Funding Body will explain the methods they use.
How do I organise the training recommended in my report?
Arrangements vary, but always ask about any recommended training as soon as your equipment is delivered, so that you get the most benefit from it.
How do I get the non-medical helper support recommended in my report?
Contact the Disability Team at your University. They will already have a copy of your report.

Mission Statement

Broadbent and Co will provide in-depth advice and assessments for people with either a disability or a specific learning difficulty. Both the advice and the assessment reports will be clear and easy to follow. The reports will be written in a professional and unbiased way, to provide all the details needed by the official Funding Bodies.

We will build on current good practice, and try to improve the quality of the assessments and reports we provide, so that we continue to be regarded as a model of good practice in the field of professional assessment.
